Agnes Zsigovics joins conductor Itay Jedlin and Le Concert Étranger ensemble in a 2-to-a-part rendition of the newly reconstructed St Mark Passion.

The St Mark Passion of Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 247) is the lesser known of the three Bach Passions; this is because it is work for which we only know the libretto and circumstances of its composition.

Elora Festival: Ships in the Night

Early in his career, the genius Handel spent five inspiring years in Italy, but no record exists that he met the prolific Italian composer Vivaldi; it appears that they passed like ships in the night. Supposing these two giants did meet, let’s sample from the motets, operas and instrumental music they might have performed for each other. We are joined by the internationally renowned soprano Agnes Zsigovics in a co-production with Nota Bene Baroque Players.

Agnes and The Nota Bene Baroque Players have been invited to the Elora Festival's 35th Year Celebration for a repeat performance of this successful program. It was originally performed in Stratford and Kitchener last September as part of InnerChamber.

Bach's Mass in B minor

The King’s Chapel Choir is doing something no one else in North America is currently doing: an ongoing, three-year performance cycle featuring J.S. Bach’s St John Passion, St Matthew Passion, and Mass in B Minor. This year’s work is the famous Mass in B Minor.

The work is one of Bach’s final compositions, completed in the year before his death and not performed in its entirety until a century later, following the discovery of the original score. Now widely considered one of the greatest compositions in musical history, the Mass is a summation of Bach’s lifework, a grand synthesis of enormous musical and spiritual import.

Featuring the hand-picked chamber orchestra Ensemble Regale, the King’s choristers, and a cast of early music soloists from across North America, these performances present a rare opportunity to experience the magnificence of this work live in Nova Scotia.

La consolation du coeur

La consolation du coeur

A concert dedicated to a tumultuous period in history, the 30 Year War, featuring five German baroque composers—Buxtehüde (1637-1707), JC Bach (1642-1703), Schmelzer (1623-1680), Kuhnau (1660-1722) and Bruhns (1665-1697). To a suffering people music brought comfort, joy and the spiritual elevation for which they longed. Though music at this time was the product of profoundly religious belief, today we can appreciate these masterpieces for their intrinsic beauty, regardless of our own personal path to faith.
